One of SUGA's growing campaign initiatives is to recruit volunteers for The Growing Project, an innovative project to help those living in supported accommodation by building gardens with them and helping them grow vegetables.
Denis, who runs the project, will be coming in tomorrow evening to tell us all more about it, and hopefully we can convince some of you to volunteer to help out! Here's some more info on the project (from the group http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/group.php?v=info&ref=ts&gid=11846758762):
"The growing project aims to work with people who have been homeless and/or live in supported accommodation. The project will initially offer these people the opportunity to grow their own vegetables.
Core aims
Involving the community
The project will involve people from the community. It will accept volunteers from the university and from the local population.
Integrate people into society
People who live in supported accommodation will be given the opportunity to be involved and work with the local community. This will be done by working next to volunteers and open days plus food trading with the local community.
Motivated self development
The service users involved with The Growing Project will not only be helped to grow their own produce but also encouraged to develop as an individual. This will be done by offering more responsibility, encouraging new ideas while also creating a fun environment."
After the meeting we will also be sorting out the refreshers bunfight on Tuesday, the AGM, and for those on the Environmental Rock team we shall be discussing our roles and what to do. Beverage consumption will no doubt follow. See you there!
