Revision and exams are finally over, and it's time for a new semester of Green Action! Our first meeting of the term is on Monday 1st February meeting at 7 in the Stag's Head for the main meeting at half 7 in Nuffiled L/R C where we'll be launching our new Growing Campaign. Here's the info blurb (and facespace link http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=295021281013&index=1):
Following the failure of the Copenhagen Climate Talks it is clear that people have to start taking action themselves in their own lives and areas whilst the politicians and 'leaders' dither, and what better way to take local action than to improve the environment on our own doorstep?
SU Green Action Society is launching its Growing Campaign this semester to encourage people to get growing through many of the initiatives we're taking part in and organising:
#Guerrilla Gardening around the city and campus
#Supporting and campaigning for the new Allotment Society
#Volunteering for the The Growing Project (see http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=11846758762&ref=nf#/group.php?v=info&ref=nf&gid=11846758762, a project to help residents of local homeless and vulnerable people's shelters to grow and enjoy their own veg and participate in the wider community)
#Support local Community gardens e.g. the incipient Portswood Community Garden or the established Ropewalk Garden in St. Marys
#Get students to start using their patios and garden in private rented accommodation - through providing advice, potentially kit, started salad-growing kits and 'permablitzes'
#Encourage students to use local Food Co-ops to break the supermarket monopoly (e.g. Southampton's Food Transit Co-op)
#Campaign against Food waste and encourage the freegan approach of liberating dumped but useable food
It is our hope that through these initiatives we can get students out there and get their hands dirty, whilst improving our local environment, our links with the local community and by getting outside and active!
So come along this coming Monday and join us for the launch of this campaign. There'll be talks from AllotSoc on their plans, as well as from the guerilla gardening group and discussion on the other initiatives too. The week after Denis from the Growing Project will be visiting to introduce that project too.
