Q: Can everyone apply to the scheme?
A: Only students from the University of Bristol, University of Cambridge, Oxford Brookes University, University of Oxford and University of Southampton can apply to the scheme.
Q: When is the application deadline?
A: Friday 21 January at 5pm (Friday 25 February at 5pm for Oxford Brookes University students).
Q: How long will the internship last?
A: Placements will take place during university summer holidays and last from 3 weeks to 2 months, depending on your host organisation.
Q: Are the internships full time or part time?
A: This is to be discussed between the intern and the organisation. In the past, students have interned for 2-5 days per week.
Q: Where are your internships based?
A: Internships will be based in Bristol, Cambridge, London, Oxford and Southampton,
Q: Are the internships paid?
A: We encourage all host organisations to pay interns. However, many third sector organisations cannot afford to do so so we cannot guarantee you will be paid. Ethical Internships are available to all, irrespective of background or ability to support oneself financially. Here at Student Hubs, we want to make sure you get the support you need if you can't afford to work for free:
- We'll make sure you get paid reasonable expenses (for lunch and travel where necessary)
- We ensure your placement can be flexible or part time so you can undertake paid employment alongside if you need to.
- If you don't have anywhere to stay (for instance, if you do not have your university accommodation over the summer holiday) we will help put you in touch with local students or others who might have a spare room.
- If you have any other problems, or the above support is not sufficient, Student Hubs is committed to helping you out - just get in touch.
Remember, Ethical Internships are never unpaid slave labour: all placements are meaningful - we make sure hosts don't have you just making the tea!
Q: Will there be an interview?
A: Interviews will take place in February 2011.
Q: How do I sign up for ethical internship email alerts?
A: Sign up to your local hub mailing list (email info@studenthubs.org if you don't know how).
Q: When will I find out if I will have an interview?
A: You should be hearing from us within 10 days of the application deadline on Friday 21 January. You will be informed within 5 days of your interview if you have been accepted onto the Ethical Internships scheme for 2011. We will then work to assign your host organisation.
Q: Can I update my application once I've submitted the online form?
A: You will not be able to edit the application form once submitted, so if you would like to prepare your answers to the questions in the 'Application' section, note them down and then copy in your responses before submitting the form. If any of your personal details change before the application deadline, please email ethical.internship@studenthubs.org to let us know.
Q: Does Student Hubs have an equal opportunities policy?
A: At Student Hubs we accept and value people from any background and with diverse identities, in line with our Equal Opportunities policy. If accepted onto the Ethical Internships scheme for 2011, we will invite you to fill in an anonymous Equal Opportunities form.
If you have any questions not listed here, get in touch on ethical.internships@studenthubs.org.
